Choreographic Camouflage – shuruqtramontini

Choreographic Camouflage is a music film directed by Liam Young and choreographed by Jacob Jonas.

A new vocuabulary of camouflage movements that disguise the proportions of the human body from the body detection algorithms used by city surveillance networks. The film is an overlay of slow motion footage and machine vision visualizations of the way skeleton detection algorithms are trying to read and recognize the body in motion.

Choreographic Camouflage is the result of a collaboration between architect and director Liam Young and choreographer Jacob Jonas in the form of a dance performance and film. It is an artistic response to new technology developed in China that automatically identifies people by recognising their skeleton and tracking their unique gait, which was used against protesters in Hong Kong. The dancers in this piece perform movements that confuse the algorithm by distorting proportions and symmetry to prevent tracking. To use choreography as a form of resistance against surveillance is to use one set of instructions carried out by the body to confront the appropriation of our uniqueness by another set of instructions carried out by those in power, and possibly defeat it with the same logic.

Liam Young is a designer, director and BAFTA nominated producer who operates in the spaces between design, fiction and futures. As a worldbuilder he visualizes the cities, spaces and props of our imaginary futures for the film and television industry and with his own films he has premiered with platforms ranging from Channel 4, Apple+, SxSW, Tribeca, the New York Metropolitan Museum, The Royal Academy, Venice Biennale, the BBC and the Guardian. His films have been collected internationally by museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria and M Plus Hong Kong and has been acclaimed in both mainstream and design media including features with TED, Wired, New Scientist, Arte, Canal+, Time magazine and many more.
