Dal 29 novembre 2025 al 22 febbraio 2026, la Kunsthalle Osnabrück ospita la nuova mostra di !Mediengruppe Bitnik, collettivo svizzero noto per le opere di net art che mettono in crisi il rapporto tra tecnologia, controllo e libertà. Il titolo “Computer Says No” evoca la risposta automatica di un sistema che nega accesso o possibilità, sottolineando la crescente dipendenza da algoritmi e intelligenze artificiali. L’opera indaga la “corporeità fantasma” dell’IA, ovvero la sua presenza invisibile ma pervasiva, capace di influenzare desideri, comportamenti e decisioni politiche. Questa ricerca si inserisce nel percorso del duo Domagoj Smoljo and Carmen Weisskopf, che da anni lavora sul confine tra digitale e fisico, introducendo elementi di perdita di controllo per smascherare le logiche di sorveglianza e automazione. Basti ricordare:
- Opera Calling (2007): microfoni nascosti al Teatro dell’Opera di Zurigo trasmettevano le performance a numeri casuali, democratizzando (e destabilizzando) l’accesso alla cultura.
- Random Darknet Shopper (2014): un bot che acquistava oggetti sul darknet, rivelando la natura opaca e automatizzata del commercio online.
- Delivery for Mr. Assange (2013): un pacco con telecamera inviato a Julian Assange, trasformando la spedizione in performance globale.
Con Computer Says No, Bitnik affronta il tema più urgente: chi decide quando il computer dice “no”? È l’algoritmo, il governo, la corporation? E cosa significa per la nostra autonomia?
!Mediengruppe Bitnik (read – the not mediengruppe bitnik) work on and with the Internet. iT is a Berlin-based artist duo founded by Domagoj Smoljo and Carmen Weisskopf. They work both on the internet and with it as a medium. Through their work, the artists raise topical questions about data realities, surveillance, non-human entities and networking, among other issues.Their artistic practice expands from the digital to affect physical spaces, often intentionally employing loss of control to challenge established structures and mechanisms. They have been known to subvert surveillance cameras, bug an opera house to broadcast its performances to people at home, physically glitch a building, and unleash a bot on a three-month darknet shopping spree where it randomly bought items like keys, cigarettes, trainers and Ecstasy and had them sent directly to the gallery space.
!Mediengruppe Bitnik regularly collaborate with other artists, curators and institutions. Recently, they curated programmes, exhibitions and conferences on Unreal Data and practices of collective action and resistance. They also launched a foundation to fund radically contemporary Internet art called Error 417 Expectation Failed.
